Tenafly NJ Real Estate: Why Buyers Keep Coming Back to This Town

Tenafly is not the loudest town in Bergen County. It does not have the biggest downtown or the most restaurants. What it does have is some of the best schools in the state, some of the most desirable real estate on the East Hill, and a location that makes commuting into the city about as painless as it gets from New Jersey.

I rank Tenafly number one among the premium Bergen County towns for a reason. The homes here are different from what you see in Ridgewood or Glen Rock. You get more new construction, especially up on the East Hill. Larger lots, modern builds, and a feel that is closer to Alpine than it is to the rest of the county. The median price sits in the $1.2 to $1.5 million range, but new construction on the East Hill routinely pushes past $2.5 million.

Schools are the obvious draw. Tenafly High School consistently ranks among the top five to twenty in New Jersey. Blue Ribbon. SAT scores are some of the highest in Bergen County. The elementary and middle schools feed directly into a district that families move here specifically for. You do not end up in Tenafly by accident. You come here because you did your research and the schools were at the top of your list.

The commute works. Tenafly is about twenty minutes from the George Washington Bridge. If you drive into the city, which a lot of Tenafly residents do, you are not dealing with the train schedules or the bus. You just get in the car and go. That flexibility matters to people who work late or have unpredictable schedules.

Downtown Tenafly is not Ridgewood. It is smaller, quieter. You have a handful of solid restaurants, a bakery, a coffee shop, the essentials. But honestly, a lot of people in Tenafly do not need a downtown. They have their space, their privacy, their schools, and they drive to wherever they need to go. The lifestyle here is residential first. That is the appeal.

If you are thinking about Tenafly, the East Hill is where the premium is highest. New construction, views, larger lots. The rest of town still delivers excellent value but at a lower entry point. Either way, you are buying into one of the most consistent markets in Bergen County. Homes here hold value because the demand never really drops.
